India’s leading wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar in the Capital since Sunday, seeking an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
Navjot Singh Sidhu, a four-time Member of Parliament, has expressed his shock and dismay over the lack of action in response to complaints of sexual harassment made by nine prominent women wrestlers, and said he would join in their protest at Jantar Mantar in the national capital on Monday.
In a tweet, Sidhu called it a “tear on the cheek of time in Indian history” that no FIR (First Information Report) had been registered despite these women coming forward.
Sidhu emphasized that any country that insults its women icons is ultimately hurting its own pride. These women have brought glory to the nation and have served as an inspiration to millions of people, he added.
According to Sidhu, failing to address these complaints and protect the dignity of these women is tantamount to harming India’s national pride. He questioned whether the “bigwigs” of the country are above the law and called for a strong deterrent to be set to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
To show his solidarity with the women, Sidhu announced that he will be visiting them on Monday to join their ‘satyagraha. He emphasized that setting a good example is the best way to preach the importance of respecting women and that the law must be enforced to ensure that generations to come will not tolerate such disrespect towards women.
The lack of action in response to the complaints made by these nine women has sparked outrage and calls for accountability from various sections of Indian society.
